Meanwhile the former Post Office, which has been "Acquired for Clients" for some time, is now available To Let.

Capricho – Portuguese Kitchen

The forgotten part of Barkingside Town Centre, round the corner past the Fairlop Oak in Fencepiece Road, has a new restaurant. It’s not the normal café/takeaway we associate with Barkingside; this one is aiming at the high-end market normally associated with South Woodford or Gants Hill. Having lost Chubby Panda (wipes tear from cheek) this could be the critical mass for a new era in Barkingside. Complementing this night-time restaurant we have the Turkish Café 104, Spice, Birashwamys and Sharod. A thriving night-time economy needs variety.

Introducing Marta Freitas, a local Barkingside resident, and her new passion Capricho – a Portuguese restaurant. She is from Portugal so you can expect authentic Portuguese food and wine. Whenever someone says I’d like a bookshop/whatever in the High Street the answer is always, “fine, if you think there is a market for it, you open one”. Marta did it and jolly good luck to her.

It’s in Fencepiece Road by the junction with Tomswood Hill where Triton Cycles used to be.

Not sure on the vegetarian/vegan options but I expect our local reporter will let us know.

All Change and No Change

We have a report of two new shops in Barkingside High Street.

The long empty Essex News at number 44 is to be a Money Exchange, whatever that means.

And further up at number 86 where Toyology was and then Armour is to open as a, wait for it, Coffee Time. Not sure if this is a café or just sells coffee beans.

And even further up at number 116 1st Step Mobility has closed.

Still no sign of any activity at the old Post Office or Fullwell Autos

Flower Kiosk

Well, the three retail units that were occupied by Fullwell Autos remain available. Fullwell Autos closed its doors over a year ago in November 2015. The two retail units occupied by the old Post Office also remain unoccupied but have been “Acquired for clients” now for some time.

But the Kiosk next to the [singular] public toilet on the High Street, which has been available since April 2016, looks like it may have a taker.

This (above) appeared in the “weekly” licence “updates” for week ending 11 December 2016 and was published on Redbridge-i in the last few days along with all the other “weekly” updates from 7 November 2016 to 9 January 2017 and included all the Christmas events needing licences that have now been and gone.

Vaping in Barkingside

We had noticed that Ye Olde Sweet Shop had closed just before Christmas but we thought it was being refurbished. Turns out that it is now a Hale Vape Shop, which opened on 26 December, Boxing Day.

So, if you need some help to quit smoking and keep your new year resolution this is the place to go.

Chigwell Organics

Not strictly in Barkingside but Manford Way is a regular haunt for some Barkingside people, this new shop deals in all things organic, which we at Barkingside 21 approve of.

In fact it’s so new that it doesn’t even come up on a Google search, but it is there at number 199 and also has the seal of approval from our MP Wes Streeting and our Tea Man Councillor Roy Emmett.

Hasan Durna, the proprietor, says “We aim to ensure our local residents have access to products good for the world, good for the animals and good for the environment.

With significant nutritional differences between organic and non organic farming and the growing awareness of this, is with no doubt the reason for an ongoing demand for organic food.

Our primary mission is to provide our residents with the best quality products benefiting not only their health but also for the best of our planet., we say never settle for anything less than organic.

Our products will consist of spices, herbs, cereals, pulses and many more ingredients and healthy options which can accompany ones meal.
